American author of bestselling detective novels. After years of amateur film-making and writing short fiction, Crais began his professional writing career as a scriptwriter for leading television shows such as Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, Quincy, Miami Vice, and L.A. Law. He received an Emmy nomination for his work on Hill Street Blues, and wrote the script for a 4-hour NBC miniseries, Cross of Fire, a documentation of the Ku Klux Klan’s rise to national prominence in the 20s. In 1986, he devoted himself exclusively to a career as a novelist. His first
