Jacques-Yves Cousteau
French naval officer, oceanographer, explorer, ecologist, writer, filmmaker, and photographer. Cousteau (1910 – 1997) pioneered the fields of oceanography and marine conservation. He founded the French navy's undersea research group in 1945, and in 1957 was made director of the oceanographic museum of Monaco. Beginning in 1951, he went on annual oceanographic expeditions which were recorded in more than 120 natural history films and television documentaries. He also wrote or co-wrote numerous books. He co-developed the aqua-lung, and also helped develop the bathyscaphe. His first feature-length documentary film, Silent World was released in 1956 and earned him the "Palme D'Or" at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar, as did his second 1964 film World Without Sun. In 1968, he began filming The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, a popular series for television world wide. It ended in 1975, but he began a new series in 1986, Discovering the World. He is one of only a few foreigners to be admitted to the American Academy of Sciences.
