Arthur C. Clarke
Preeminent British science fiction and non-fiction writer and inventor. Considered along with Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov as one of the Big Three of science fiction writing, Sir Arthur Charles Clarke is the author of more than sixty fiction and non-fiction books, and winner of all the highest honors in the science fiction genre including being named Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1986. In addition to novels, he has written short stories, essays, scientific papers, and non-fiction on a wide range of scientific subjects for popular consumption. In 1968 he shared an Oscar Academy Award nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the film version of his novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey. He co-broadcasted the Apollo 11 , 12 and 15 missions with Walter Cronkite and Wally Schirra for CBS, and produced several of his own television programs. His most important scientific contribution has been the use of geostationary satellites as telecommunications relays, and idea he proposed in 1945, although John R. Pierce of Bell Labs arrived at the idea independently in 1954. Clarke was knighted in 2000 and has receives numerous other awards and honors. Clarke's 3rd, and most famous, "Law": Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
