Jimmy Carter
39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace laureate. James Earl Carter, Jr. was the 39th President of the United States (1977–1981). Previously, he had served as Governor of Georgia (1971-1975). During his post-presidential years, he has been an active elder statesman as an international mediator, elections monitor, peace negotiater, and free-lance diplomat. He founded the Carter Center which is devoted to promoting democracy and human rights, national and international public policy, conflict resolution, and various charitable causes. In 2002, he was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace. Carter has written 20 well-received books.
