Milton Caniff
American cartoonist famous for the Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon comic strips. Milton Arthur Paul Caniff (1907 - 1988) began his comic strip career by producing Dickie Dare for the Associated Press. Two years later, he was hired by the New York Daily News to produce Terry and the Pirates. Caniff's association with Terry and the Pirates ended in 1946 because the strip was owned by the newspaper, not Caniff. Caniff introduced his own strip, Steve Canyon, in the Chicago Sun-Times in 1947. He was one of the founders of the National Cartoonist Society, and received the society's first Cartoonist of the Year Award in 1946 for Steve Canyon. He received many awards over the years from the society, finally winning the Gold Key Award (the Society's Hall of Fame) in 1981.
