Sample Autograph Signature: WIlliam Gibson

American playwright and novelist best known for his play American playwright and novelist, most famous for The Miracle Worker, which won the Tony Award for Best Play. Born November 13, 1914, Gibson grew up in the Bronx and graduated from City College in 1938. He then moved to Topeka, Kansas, where he supported himself by playing and teaching piano while writing mostly unsuccessful stories and poetry. In 1940 he married Margaret Brenman, a psychotherapist whose income enabled Gibson to continue to write. They moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in the early 1950's and it was there that Gibson had his first great success in 1954 with The Cobweb, a best-selling novel set in a hospital much like the Menninger Clinic in Topeka. Gibson had written plays for the local theater in Kansas and this was the field he soon excelled in. Two for the Seesaw was his Broadway debut in 1958, soon to be followed by The Miracle Worker in 1959, which was an expansion of his 1957 television play. These two works not only secured his place in the American Theatre Hall of Fame, they also launched the career of Anne Bancroft. Gibson was expecially effective in developing strong but popular female characters in his writings. He continued to write plays, scripts, and a few books until his death on November 25, 2008, with mixed results, but he never again achieved the success of these early works.
