Maxwell, Wright & Co.
Commercial Formalities of Rio de Janeiro
Publisher: Rio de Janeiro, T. B. Hunt & Co., 1834.. 95 p., tables; contemporary wrappers. This rare commercial guide gives details of goods, prices, cargoes and duties and is directed to merchants and traders of the United States carrying on commerce with Brazil. The work includes figures on United States vessels in Rio between the years 1819 and 1833 (169 ships in the latter year), with much on coffee and sugar. 'Important changes in the Tariff and Rules of the Port having rendered our pamphlets of 1828 and 1830, incorrect, we offer to our Commercial friends, the present, corrected to the existing conditions' (p. 1). This copy is updated in manuscript through July of 1836. A nice, crisp copy of a book which by its nature has become scarce, and certainly unusual in such excellent condition. Kress C.5568 (1841 edition). Not in Borba de Moraes, Rodrigues, Berger, Sabin. NUC 371: 338 --Baltimore, 1828 (MH-BA, MB); Baltimore, 1830 (DLC); Rio, 1841 (MH), as well as this edition. R&D. Stock #26410. Vg/in original blue wrappers. Trade relations, history, South America.
