20.   Steinbeck, John [& E.F. Ricketts].   Sea Of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal Of Travel And Research.   Publisher: The Viking Press. New York.. First Edition, 1941. Emerald green cloth boards stamped in silver at spine and front cover, in sea-green and red dustwrapper. Fine/Near Fine+. The jacket, which is bright and unfaded and clean, has mi nor edgewear and two short closed tears to lower front panel. A quite lovely copy of this large and easily abused book. 598pp, with Index, profusely illustrated with black and white and color plates, and with a long Annotated Phyletic Catalogue and Bibliography. Steinbeck's biologist-co-author was a lifelong friend and the model for the hero of Cannery Row. This is Steinbeck's most impressive non- fiction work, published just two years after The Grapes Of Wrath, written at the height of his powers of narration and description. An important book for various reasons, not least of which is that it is a fascinating account of a trip to an unspoiled Baja. 1st Edition Dust Jacket Included Hardcover Fine

27.   Steinbeck, John.   The Red Pony.   Publisher: New York: Covici Friede Publishers.. First Edition, 1937. 1/26 copies printed letterpress on handmade paper, lettered A-Z on the Colophon in red ink (this copy #VV), SIGNED by Steinbeck, bound in flexible tan cloth boards with grey crossing lines and reddish brown horse on front cover, red lettering to spine, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, in a brown paper covered slipcase printed at spine with the copy number handwritten thereon. A Near Fine copy of book, the only consideration being light toning and fading of spine lettering, in a Very Good example of the fragile slipcase, professionally restored along edges, slightly toned along spine panel. The unrecorded lettered issue, apparently unknown to Goldstone [A9a]. Though presently a copy appears on the market denoted QQ, on the limitation page, it seems reasonable to assume that the lettered issue was at least originally intended to be kept to 26 copies, though more may have been available, and additionally distributed with the annotated double-alphabetical designation. 81pp. Subtitled 1.
