Illus. with 79 b/w plates + frontis. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) sold his first illustration to St. Nicholas Magazine at age 12. In this 1909 book we have a collection of his large drawings for Harper's Weekly. A good or better solid copy of this hard to find title, boards foxed and worn at the edges, but binding solid and leaves clean but for occasional marginal soiling.

Publisher: Harper & Brothers New York 1907. Paperbound, 13-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches, color illustration of a woman in yellow duster and veiled hat, caught in the beam of a headlight. Includes pages 363-410. This is an ORIGINAL printing, not a recent facsimile or reproduction. Please note that one leaf is missing: pp 397-8, which appears to have been some short humorous anecdotes and jokes, not pertinent to the theme of this issue. The issue iteself is a wonderful peek at the very beginnings of automobile manufacture and travel. Issues covered include tires, roads and how to improve them, shock eliminators, the use of autos in various fields (including prospecting in Nevada, disaster relief in Jamaica), the advances in electrical cars, and even an article by Henry Ford about using vanadium ("the new element") in steel for autos. There are a number of full-page auto ads, including Pope-Toledo, the Stearns, the Rambler, Columbia, C. G. V. (Charron, Girardot, Voigt) importers, Morgan & Wright Tires (a two-page spread), and of course illlustrated ads for many other products. Condition issues aside from the missing page, there are a few pages with a finger-smudge in the margin, and the cover has a couple of closed tears at the spine edge and is missing a small chip hear the spine head. Some scuffs and light soil on rear cover. Everything else is in exceptional conditon for this issue.
