8.   Bunin, Ivan; Andreyev, Leonid   Lazarus [by Andreyev] and The Gentleman from San Francisco [by Bunin], SIGNED [Gospodin iz San-Frantsisko]   Publisher: Boston The Stratford Company 1918. First edition A Very Good + copy of the first edition in the English language, first printing, of each of these two works in the Publisher's original buff paper covered boards (general rubbing and edge wear, some cracking at the spine edges), SIGNED BY IVAN BUNIN on the half-title. Each work was translated to English by Avrahm Yarmolinsky. Famed Russian author of novels, short stories, and plays, Leonid Nikolaievich Andreyev was an active supporter of democracy during the first Russian Revolution (1905) which brought a number of concessions from the Tsar, and strongly opposed the Bolshevik excesses of the second Revolution, leaving for Finland in 1917. A master of the short story and author of "The Gentleman from San Francisco", Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin won the 1933 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing", making him the first Russian writer ever to win the Prize. Bunin also won Russia's Pushkin Prize multiple times, and counted other great writers, such as Vladimir Nabokov among his admirers. The best-known of Bunin's short stories (one could, and perhaps should, call it a novella), "The Gentleman from San Francisco" was first published in Russia (1916) to great discussion and general acclaim. At least one Russian critic of the day, A. Derman, maintained that, after the deaths of Tolstoy and Chekhov, nothing worthy of note appeared in Russian Literature until publication of "The Gentleman from San Francisco". In his 1933 presentation speech, Per Hallström, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, cited "The Gentleman from San Francisco as being "the novella that came to be his most famous work" and pointed out that it was "immediately accepted as a literary masterpiece". Here we offer the first appearance of the story in the English language. [About 4 years after publication of the book offered here, Leonard Woolf published "The Gentleman from San Francisco and Other Stories" (1922) containing a later translation of the tale by D. H. Lawrence and S. S. Koteliansky.] Copies of the true first edition in English of this important short story, offered here, are quite scarce, especially when in collectable condition, and are even scarcer when in a condition as nice as is this copy. Furthermore, this novella is Ivan Bunin's debut publication in English, adding to the importance of this edition. Signed copies of any of Bunin's works in English translation are as scarce as hen's teeth, and signed copies of the book offered here are RARE. [Auction records reveal only 2 signed Bunin works having come to auction in the last 40 years, each of them in Russian and one being a second printing.] A Very Good + copy of an important short story by the Nobel Prize-winner Ivan Bunin, his debut publication in English, published together with "Lazarus" by his acclaimed fellow Russian author Leonid Andreyev, and SIGNED BY IVAN BUNIN. AN IMPORTANT WORK AND RARE INDEED.
