Harris, Eileen & Nicholas Savage.
British Architectural Books & Writers, 1556-1785.
Publisher: Cambridge UP, 1990; reprint by arrangement, Martino 2000. 8vo; 571 p., illus.; 24 cm. The emergence around 1960 of a new interest in collecting early architectural works, and publication in 1961 of The Fowler Architectural Collection, made apparent that some attempt at providing collations and editions for English architectural books would be welcomed as well. This work includes all books pertaining to architecture and the building trades: books on the five orders, pattern-books, books of design, builders' manuals, textbooks, price books, books on building materials, architectural criticism, and polemical publications generated by public building projects such as the Mansion House and new bridges at Bristol, Dublin, and London. This work provides useful biographies of each author; a bibliographical record of each author's published works, including all known editions; and full collations, including illustrations, for over one thousand titles. Stock#34868x. Fine, blue binder's cloth; new from the publisher.

Harris, Frank, 1856-1931. Gallagher, John F.
My Life and Loves. Edited and with an Introduction by John F. Gallagher. Five Volumes in One, Complete & Unexpurgated.
Publisher: N.Y., Grove Press, 1963. ”First Printing". Frank Harris, born in Galway, educated at an American (Kansas) and a German (Gottingen) University, worked in the air chambers during construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, was in Chicago when it burned, was a cowboy, and in London became one of the great magazine editors of his day, introducing Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells and hiring the young G. B. Shaw as drama critic. His autobiography is filled with literary and historical/political insights. Harris believed one's sexual history as important a manifestation of life as any other and included vivid descriptions of his love life which seems for the most part in his elder years of seducing young girls. It is this aspect of the book to which readers-- not you-- have gravitated and praised or condemned according to one's attitude about sex. That's a shame because this is a wide-ranging book by a strong and independent personality. 25890. xviii, 983 p.; Vg/dj worn.

Contents: Legends of the Old Plantation (34); Plantation Proverbs (pp. 173-180); His Songs (10); A Story of the War; His Sayings (21). ‘…it seems to me that a volume written wholly in dialect must have its solemn, not to say melancholy, features. With respect to the Folk-Lore series, my purpose has been to preserve the legends themselves in their original simplicity, and to wed them permanently to the quaint dialect— if, indeed, it can be called a dialect— through the mediium of which they have become a part of the domestic history of every Southern family; and I have endeavored to give to the whole a genuine flavor of the old plantation.’ Arthur Burdette Frost, 1851-1928, made the drawings which reside in readers’ imaginations. stock#27467
