Kennan was on the inside of American diplomacy with the USSR at the beginning of the cold war and retired at age 46. In the epilogue, he wanders through the third floor of his farmhouse "surveying with hapless amusement the abundent flotsam and jetsam of an earlier life that have somehow become stranded in this place..." This is the nature of the book, and I find it very appealing. Vg/dj vg. 101684x.

This book was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in history, the Bancroft Prize, and the Francis Parkman Prize. Kennan was a career diplomat from 1926 to 1953, then a professor of history at the Institute for Advance Studies in Princeton. This detailed history of Russian-American diplomacy immediately after the Bolshevik revolution (and during the last year of World War One) is based on unpublished papers of the diplomats involved as well as on previously published diaries, memoirs, letters, and secondary sources. Shipping weight 3 lbs.
