Publisher: Lausanne 1967. First edition A Near Fine copy of the September, 1967 issue of "Dialogue. Journal des Livres et des Idees", the Swiss literary and philosophical newspaper. The entire issue is devoted to praise of Ezra Pound and was published in an attempt to persuade the Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Prize in Literature to Pound, with the primary supportive article being written by Piero Sanavio. This copy has been INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY PIERO SANAVIO TO EZRA POUND at the top of the front page as follows: "To Ezra for a happy new year. Piero Sanavio ~ ". This copy ALSO HAS BEEN SIGNED BY EZRA POUND (in a stylish manner and with two exclamation points) on the front page adjacent to his printed portrait. Italian author, poet, translator, and prestigious literature professor Piero Sanavio was born in 1922 to a highly-literary and pro-fascist family. Both a Rockefeller Fellow and a Literary ambassador for the United Nations, Sanavio taught, among other places, at Harvard, Brandeis, University of Michigan, Yale, and Princeton, and championed Pound throughout his career. [Notably, disillusioned with England due to the carnage of World War I, which he blamed on usury and international capitalism, Pound relocated to Italy in 1925 where he later embraced Mussolini's fascism, vocalized support for Hitler, and wrote for publications owned by Oswald Mosley (founder of the British Union of Fascists). During World War II Pound, paid by Italy, made hundreds of radio broadcasts critical of the United States and, as a result thereof, American forces arrested him for treason in 1945.] This issue also contains writing in support of Pound by George Seferis, Eugenio Montale, Ernest Hemingway, and T. S. Eliot, each of whom won the Nobel Prize in Literature, as well as by notable literary figures Edith Sitwell, Lewis Wyndham. This copy, from the Estate of Actor and decorated Naval Officer Douglas Fairbanks with his bookplate loosely laid in, is in excellent condition for such a delicate item, showing mild toning and with the usual newspaper-style spine fold, one additional vertical fold, and one horizontal fold, typical of a newspaper one might fold an extra time to carry under one's arm. There is some wear at the horizontal fold with a tiny split at each end of the fold -- one of which produces a tiny hole at what becomes the center of the issue when it is opened -- and with a tiny hole at what is the center of numbered page 3. (The entire issue is comrised of a single large sheet with printing on both the recto and the verso, producing 4 numbered newspaper-style sheets when folded.) Ephemeral in nature, not very many copies will have survived to the present day and thus the issue itself is quite scarce. Signed copies of this publication are, of course, RARE. A scarce copy of this issue of "Dialogue", devoted entirely to Ezra Pound, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED TO EZRA POUND BY PIERO SANAVIO and ALSO SIGNED BY EZRA POUND. QUITE RARE.
