4.   Stanton, Elizabeth Cady   Eighty Years and More (1815-1897) Reminiscences of Elizabeth Cady Stanton.   Publisher: European Publishing Company New York, New York 1898, 1898. 474 pages; portraits; index; ads in back; green cloth binding with gilt lettering. Elizabeth Stanton (1815-1902) was a social activist, abolitionist and leader in the early woman's movement. Her 'Declaration of Sentiments' issued in Seneca Fall, New York in 1848 is credited with initiating the first organized women's rights & sufferage movement in the United States. However, unlike her fellow activists she believed in woman's pratal and custodial rights, property rights, divorce laws, birth control and temperance. After the Civil War she fought against the 14th & 15th admendments saying 'why them and not women too'. Along with her religious beliefs this helped split the women's rights movement. Since 1851 Stanton had teamed up with Susan Anthony with Stantaon writng many of the papers and Anthony giving the speeches. In 1881 along with Anthony and Gage she wrote 'History of Women Sufferage (6 volume series finished in 1922) which included the documents and letters of the leaders of the woman's sufferage movement. Stanton wrote 'Solitude of Self' for her testimony before Congress in 1892 which summed up her beliefs for woman's rights. By the 1990s she was publishing and writing about the Bible, her publication known as 'Women's Bible', a study of the role played by organized religion in the lives of women, caused a stir among the more conservative members of the movement and Stanton was forced into the background. Her last high point was being elected President of the National American Women's Sufferage Association in 1890 ending the division that lasted twenty years in the woman's movement. Her Memoirs were near the end of her life and give a full and frank account of the role she played in the right's movement. A fine clean copy of this important book in the struggle for women's rights. First Edition Fine
