Dooley was a cultured young Richmond soldier of the First Virginia Infantry, Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division, First Corps Army of Northern Virginia. His combat diary begins after Cedar Mountain in 1862 and ends with Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg where he was wounded and captured.
