Author Pseudonyms, Pseudos, Pen Name's, AKA's
|
Authors have long used pen names, or noms de plume, as pseudonyms. The
three Bronte sisters famously adopted androgynous names to circumvent
the prejudice against female writers. Some very prolific writers used
pen names in order to hide the extent of their output, while other
authors simply wished to mask their true identities for one reason or
another. Then there are names adopted in a spirit of playfulness, such
as Edward Gorey's noms de plume, most of which are anagrams of his real
name. And there are collective pen names like Ellery Queen which are
shared by two or more people.
Many of these pen names are now common knowledge but there may be a few
on our list which will surprise you.
