Mrs. E. D. E. N. Southworth (1819-1899)

A very popular novelist of the domestic-sentimental school. Mrs. E. D. E. N. Southworth (Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte) was born in Washington, D.C., and educated in Boston. In 1840 she married Frederick Southworth of Utica, NY and they settled on a farm in Wisconsin. Within 3 years she returned to Washington without her husband, but with an infant son. A daughter was born a few weeks latter. As a single mother, she soon had great financial difficulties and turned to writing. Her first novel, Retribution (1848) was followed by some 60 similar romances with melodramtic plots. Most of her novels were set in the South.
