HENRY LAWSON (1867-1922) - Australian poet
Henry Archibald Hertzberg Lawson was one of Australia’s best known poets and was a short story writer, known for his realistic portrayals of bush life.

Born near Grenfell, New South Wales, of struggling gold field parents, he was hampered by deafness from the time he was nine and by poverty and unhappiness in his family. His parents separated in 1883, and it was then that that his activist mother went to Sydney and began publishing the feminist newspaper The Dawn. Henry followed his mother to Sydney and soon thereafter, The Bulletin published his first stories and verses (1887–88). During those years he worked for several newspapers but also spent much time wandering. Out of these experiences came material for his vivid, realistic writing, which, by its often pessimistic blend of pathos and irony, captured some of the spirit of Australian working life. His later years were increasingly unhappy, and he suffered from alcoholism. Lawson died on 2 September 1922 at Abbotsford, N.S.W. The Prime Minister, W.M. Hughes, decreed him a State funeral, and after an impressive ceremony at St. Andrew's Cathedral he was buried at Waverley cemetery.
